Your leather every day: 5 rules to follow

By following these basic tips, you can save your leather jacket from a whole host of problems!

  • Hang your leather on a hanger when you store it so that it retains its shape. Don't lend it to anyone because your leather garment will adapt to your body shape like a pair of shoes.

  • Avoid exposing your leather jacket to direct sunlight for too long (on the back of a car, for example). Excessive heat softens the leather and could permanently alter its colour.

  • Don't put a plastic cover over your leather jacket, as this will prevent it from breathing. Instead, store a fabric or cotton cover in your wardrobe.

  • If your leather gets wet, leave it to dry on a hanger at room temperature.

  • Waterproof your leather right from the start!

Waterproofing your leather jacket
Right from the start, think about waterproofing your leather! Yes, when you buy it, your jacket is brand new and hasn't been treated in any way! Repeat the operation about once every three months. However, the more you wear it, and it's exposed to the elements, the more it's advisable to repeat the operation regularly!
How do I waterproof a leather jacket?
Spray from a distance of about 25cm.

First of all, you need to choose the right product! If you don't have one, turn to Leather-Jack.com waterproofing spray (see the product). It's an anti-stain aerosol spray that will prevent stains from forming...

Now that you have the waterproofing product, all you have to do is spray it about 25cm from your jacket. Never insist on spraying a particular area to avoid leaving a residue. Finally, we always advise you to test a new product on the inside of the jacket to see the results before tackling the rest. And last but not least, remember to clean your jacket before each new waterproofing operation!

How do I clean a leather jacket?

You're probably wondering how to wash leather. This is indeed the most challenging part, and we always advise you to take your jacket to a leather specialist, who will be able to advise you according to the model, the quality of the hide and the nature of the problem!

If, however, you'd like to carry out the operation yourself, you'll find our advice on how to avoid problems opposite! What's more, if you're looking for a good product, we recommend Leather-Jack.com cleansing milk (see the product), designed to be applied safely to most leathers and will help you get rid of minor stains! Please note that this product only works on smooth leather! Please do not use it on velvet, tumbled or oily leather!

Although vegetable-tanned leathers can also be smoothed, we recommend using a solvent-free cream such as Fama Eco, which is less aggressive for leather that has not undergone chemical treatment.

Finally, you can use a cloth soaked in F petrol for more persistent stains. You'll find this in any good DIY shop. Be careful, though, as this operation is already a little less harmless!

Our tips for cleaning your leather yourself:

Never scrape the surface of the leather with an abrasive object (sponge, fingernail, etc.), as this will scratch it. Use a chamois cloth instead!

Never iron your leather garment.

Never wash it in water, either by hand or in the washing machine!

To remove minor dirt, use a slightly damp cloth!

If you use a cleaning product, always test it on an inconspicuous area first!

How do I use the cleansing milk or delicate cream?

Soak the chamois

Apply the cream

And what about my suede leather jacket?

If you have a suede jacket or any other type of suede leather, this advice is not for you! There are specific products for this material. The suede brush (for dusting) and Raviv Daim spray are perfect! You can always find these products in our Famaco range by clicking here.

And what about our oily hides?

There are special creams that perfectly replace the action of cleansing milk and are designed to treat oily leathers. We recommend a lanolin cream like the one made in France by the Famaco laboratory.

If you use a cleaning product, always test it on an inconspicuous area first!

Any ideas for the lining?

There's nothing easier than cleaning the inner lining of your jacket! Wipe with a cloth soaked in soapy water, then rinse with a cloth soaked in lukewarm water before dabbing dry with a dry cloth!

I've got white spots on my leather!

Have you been storing your leather for a while and found it covered in small white spots? Don't worry! It's just regrowth! All you have to do to get rid of them is wipe them off with a cloth soaked in our cleansing milk!

What is regrowth?

This is a small mould that appears when the temperature changes. It's harmless and easy to remove! You only need to wipe it off with a cloth soaked in our cleaning milk!

Nourishing your leather...

Maintenance also involves nourishing your leather! This will not only extend the life of your leather but also give it a new shine when you feel it is ageing.

For smooth leather, you can use the same cleansing milk we recommend. It cleans AND nourishes! Be careful: although some "experts" recommend using baby lotion, it is not suitable for leather. Leather is a skin that has been transformed and treated to make it rot-proof. It, therefore, requires milk that is much richer in nutrients. Once you have your milk, rub the skin lightly with your chamois cloth, onto which you have previously poured a small amount of milk.

Once again, please note that suede leathers, tumbled hides, greasy leathers, and vegetable-tanned leathers will not tolerate this cream. If you're looking to feed this type of jacket, turn to a specialist who will have familiarised himself with the model beforehand.
